Laser Displacement Sensors Measure Center of Mass
Acuity’s laser triangulation sensors are perfect for measuring the center of mass of a rotating body. Positioned perpendicular to the axis of rotation, Acuity lasers can take thousands of measurements per second with accuracies as low as a single micron without adding any mass or measurable force that would skew the data.
Materials are never completely uniform. Even the best metals and plastics have impurities and tiny manufacturing defects that will keep even the most perfectly machined parts from having a perfectly balanced center of mass. An axle that is too far off-center may cause vibrations that eventually damage other parts. A golf ball that is lopsided will wobble its way into rough. Acuity lasers have the precision and the speed to improve the quality control of any rotating part and, by extension, any machine that uses it.
The AR700 laser displacement sensor, with its class-leading accuracy, is the best choice in applications with the most exacting tolerances, but even our most economical model, the AR200, has been used with success in important quality tests.
